Error measurements for flank milling

چکیده
This paper presents and compares methods of error metrics used to measure the error for the flank milling of a machined ruled surface. The aim of this work is to propose a new scheme for error approximation that is easy to implement and gives better error assessment when using optimization techniques to determine tool position. We propose using as the error calculation an approximation to the distance from the desired surface along the direction of the surface normal.

Improved Tool Positioning in 5-Axis Flank Milling by Simultaneous Perturbation Stochastic Approximation
This paper presents an improved tool positioning strategy in the 5-axis flank milling of a ruled surface by using simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (SPSA) techniques. The SPSA allows the near-global optimization of the machining error, even though the corresponding objective is not formulated as a closed-form representation. It adjusts all cutter locations of a tool path simult...
متن کاملFlank Milling Surface Design with the Least Square Approach
Typically flank milling is used to machine ruled surfaces. In this paper, a method of designing doubly curved NURBS surfaces for flank milling using the least squares method is given. In this method, grazing points generated by the Bedi et al. [4] tool positioning method are used as sample points. The user defines the degree and the number of control points along two parametric directions of th...
متن کاملImproving optimization of tool path planning in 5-axis flank milling using advanced PSO algorithms
This paper studies optimization of tool path planning in 5-axis flank milling of ruled surfaces using advanced Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) methods with machining error as an objective. We enlarge the solution space in the optimization by relaxing the constraint imposed by previous studies that the cutter must make contact with the boundary curves. Advanced Particle Swarm Optimization (APS...
متن کاملTriple tangent flank milling of ruled surfaces
This paper presents a positioning strategy for flank milling ruled surfaces. It is a modification of a positioning method developed by Bedi et al. [1]. A cylindrical cutting tool is initially positioned tangential to the two boundary curves on a ruled surface. Optimization is used to move these tangential points to different curves on the ruled surface to reduce the error. A second optimization...
متن کاملTool Path Planning for Five-Axis Flank Milling with Developable Surface Approximation
This paper presents a novel approach that automatically generates interference-free tool path for five-axis flank milling of ruled surface. A boundary curve of the machined surface is subdivided into curve segments. Each segment works as a guide curve in the design method for developable Bézier surface that controls a developable patch for approximating the surface with available degrees of fre...
